About the Play

Mission

The Black Theater Education Initiative exists to provide educators with access to contemporary Black plays that encourage critical thinking, meaningful discussion, and artistic exploration. Through complimentary instructor review copies, teaching resources, and educational partnerships, the initiative seeks to support faculty while introducing students to bold, original voices in modern Black theater.

Vision

To make contemporary Black dramatic literature a permanent part of classrooms, libraries, and stages across the United States by connecting educators with compelling new works that expand how Black stories are imagined, taught, and performed.

Why We Exist

For generations, students have studied many of the same dramatic works. While those classics remain important, contemporary Black playwrights are often underrepresented in classrooms.

The Black Theater Education Initiative was created to help bridge that gap by making new dramatic works more accessible to educators and students. Our goal is to encourage exploration of stories that reflect the breadth, complexity, imagination, and diversity of Black experiences.
